SCIENCE ON POINTE (World Science Festival)

scienceenpointe.jpg

If you’ve ever watched in awe as the black swan completes 32 fouettes, you will know that ballet sometimes seems to defy the possible. Indeed, from a beautiful pas de deux to grande jetés, hidden behind the perfect technique is a swathe of science.

The Queensland Ballet and its Artistic Director, Li Cunxin, will be joined on stage by a physics guru and a dance physiotherapist to deconstruct the movements and explain the physicality in this very graceful and enlightening collision of art and science.

12 noon - 12 midnight Saturday 21st March and Sunday 22nd March. An Instagram live-streaming festival promoting unity and community.

Playing live from bedrooms, lounge-rooms, studios or wherever they are self-isolating, artists will play a 20-minute set streamed live on their Instagram accounts, and then tag-team the next artist to play via split-screen, sending fans down a rabbit-hole of new music discovery.
Follow hashtag #isolaidfestival to watch the whole festival back later, artist by artist.

As the COVID-19 outbreak threatens live music across the globe, Australian artists from all over the world band together to create ISOL-AID, a socially (media) distanced music festival.

In a matter of weeks, tours, local shows and public appearances have been cancelled across the board and the international music community has come to a standstill and faces an uncertain future. According to ilostmygig.net.au the current tally of losses for the Australian music community, (for performers, production, crew, hospo workers, managers, booking agents & more) sits at $150 million dollars.
The impact of these cancellations is financial, psychological and emotional, and will undoubtedly be long lasting.

If they are in the financial position to do so, viewers are encouraged to buy music and merch from the artists’ Bandcamp and Patreon pages, their websites, as well as donating to fundraisers set up for @supportact
See you online. #isolaidfestival

Opening Mel O'Callaghan Exhibition: Centre of the Centre

Centre of the Centre, Mel O'Callaghan's new exhibition, traces the origins of life and its regenerative forces. The catalyst for this new body of work is one small mineral given to the artist by her grandfather, renowned mineralogist Albert Chapman. The mineral contains a small pocket of water, possibly millions of years old, which holds traces of the elemental forces responsible for all life on Earth. Inspired by the geophysical conditions and potentialities held within this primordial liquid, the artist invites the audience into a total experience.

Be part of something extraordinary. Walk across a vast, rocky, indoor riverbed created by Olafur Eliasson. See animals from around the world gather together to drink from Cai Guo-Qiang’s brilliant blue waterhole. Gaze at Peter Fischli and David Weiss’s snowman, frozen despite Brisbane’s summer heat. Reflect on the cultural traditions of bodies of water, including the Brisbane River, with Judy Watson; and consider the long history of our reliance on water, illustrated by Megan Cope’s re-created midden.
